Listeners ability to detect a fixed-frequency tone added to randomly drawn multitone maskers is poor even when the maskers have little energy in the frequency region of the signal. One potential explanation of such informational masking is that observers fail to attend exclusively to the frequency channel conveying information regarding the presence of the signal. The results from several informational masking studies will be reviewed; with an emphasis on the usefulness of linear models in capturing individual differences in sensitivity. Additionally, experiments evaluating the potency of previews and post-views of the uncertain masker will be considered.
