The Rutgers HAVEN (Haptic, Auditory, and Visual Environment) is a facility designed from the ground up to support multisensory interactive applications. The facility is a primarily single-user environment intended to be reconfigurable for a variety of interactive applications. To this end, the HAVEN incorporates a wide range of sensors, including motion trackers, a stereo-vision camera, pressure pads, force-sensors, and microphones, as well as multisensory output devices such as large-screen and table-top projection, multi-channel audio, and haptic peripherals. In my talk, I will describe the design of the HAVEN, including the installed devices and our methods of integrating the capabilities of multiple sensors and rendering devices. I will discuss the distributed architecture we developed to coordinate multi-modal rendering from different systems, and I will describe some of the applications we have implemented using the capabilities of the HAVEN.
