Visual Cognition Lab Research

Shape Representation

How does the mind represent the shape of objects and divide it into parts? What portions of a contour convey the most information? What are the dimensions of shape?

Perception of animacy and intentionality from motion

What makes some moving objects look like they are alive? Does it matter if the objects seems to have a "mind"? What makes an object seem like it has a mind?

Perceptual Organization and Grouping

How does the mind organize the visual image into contours and objects? What is an "object"? Why do we prefer simpler interpretations of the image? What makes an object at one point in time seem like the same object as another point in time?

Categorization and concept learning

How do people generalize from examples? Does the order in which we see the examples matter? Do people prefer simpler generalizations over more complex ones? Why do we prefer simple generalizations?
