Contemporary philosophy of mind is receptive to the possibility of unconscious perception. I investigate the philosophical issues posed by the postulation of such states. Primarily, I try to frame the basic concern as about the normative role of phenomenology, in epistemic and ethical circumstances. While unconscious perception might be possible, we might anyway be committed a kind of state that is essentially conscious. Sensations might seem apt for that role; but I defend another sort of state as having the required normative properties.
