Argues that no tenable account has been given of the prescientific meanings of natural-kind terms. For reasons given by Putnam in his early work, they do not have definitions in terms of observable properties. But neither of the
alternate proposals made by Putnam in "The Meaning of `Meaning'" can be
sustained either. Nor can natural-kind terms' meanings be the "primary" or
"A-"intensions recently touted by Frank Jackson and David Chalmers. Two
more alternatives are explored without success.
