Principles of Object Persistence in Infancy

One of the most studied questions across the cognitive sciences is how the mind keeps track of objects as the same persisting individuals over time and motion. My talk will summarize several studies with human infants that explore the ontogenetic foundations of this critical ability. In particular, I will focus on recent studies that highlight several signature constraints on infants� object tracking abilities that may also reflect the underlying principles supporting some of our most fundamental cognitive abilities� maintaining representations of objects through occlusion, enumeration, and tracking the identity of mental agents over time.
