Spoken language is a rich signal for language users. Adults hearing speech can use its form and its content to make inferences about its speaker. What inferences do infants make about the speech signal? I will report on studies examining young infants' biases for listening to speech as compared to other sounds, infants; expectations about the source of speech and other vocalizations, and how infants understand speech as a privileged communicative sound for humans.
