Traditionally, studies on action cognition have focused on tasks people perform by themselves. Much of what people do concerns performing actions together with others. Engaging in joint action allows people to do things they could not accomplish alone, such as dancing and building bridges. In this talk, I will consider aspects of action planning and action coordination in collaborative action tasks. The first part of the presentation will include studies on joint action planning and joint action coordination. I will then consider how acting with others influences the sense of control (sense of agency) people experience when they engage in joint actions. I will also cover research on how people track others’ beliefs in joint contexts. Embedding action cognition in interactive contexts is important, as joint actions may have shaped action cognition itself in fundamental ways.
