This talk will explore the prospects for a general theory of communication that begins with very basic signaling in animals and scales up to humans by adding various account cultural and cognitive resources. The resulting picture of human communication turns out quite different than that widely assumed in recent work by philosophers, linguists and psychologists (e.g. Clark, Grice, Sperber & Wilson). These differences will be examined, with special attention to the question of how communication and conventional meaning can persist in the face of conflicting interests and humans' ability to manipulate and deceive.
