About the Speaker

Michael Lewis, Ph.D. (personal site)
University Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry, and
Director of the Institute for the Study of Child Development, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Abstract

Lying touches upon a diverse set of social and emotional knowledge, including theory of mind, knowledge of emotional scripts, and emotional expression. Data on children's lying in everyday life will be explored, with particular emphasis on lying to protect one from punishment. An argument will be made for the proposition that lying and deception are an important part of both intra- and interpersonal life. Also explored will be the issues of etiquette and narcissism as aspects of the development of lying and deception.
