SUMMARY:Probabilistic inference of 3D shape from line drawings LOCATION:Graduate Student\, Rutgers University\, Department of Psychology DESCRIPTION:Human vision has the ability to perceive 3D shape from line drawings althou gh most of the area in a line drawing image except the contours has no info rmation about depth at all. This study looks for the mechanisms underlying inferences about 3D shape from line drawings. First, we conducted and analy zed a psychophysical experiment to understand the nature of human interpret ation of line drawings. We showed subjects line drawings with two ''probe d ots'' superimposed at locations in the drawing and asked them which appeare d closer. We found that the depth judgments propagated spatially with relat ed to the distance of probe pairs from the T-junction in line drawings. Thi s result supports that the belief in relative depth from the perceived surf ace is not deterministic as in traditional “junction catalog” methods but r ather probabilistic based on the interaction of local T-junction structure and non-local contour structure. To explain such results, we suggest a comp utational model that interprets line drawings into probable 3D surfaces in a Bayesian framework. This model numerically estimates a likelihood functio n, assuming a generative model which generates random line drawings by infl ating 3D surfaces of biological shapes from skeletons and projecting the su rfaces from random viewpoints. The relation between the contour segments in the random line drawings, which are tabulated via various local and non-lo cal features, and local 3D surfaces of the inflated shapes are kept in a d atabase, in order to search for the similar contour segments and to sample the probable local surfaces when a novel line drawing is observed. The samp les of surface orientations allow us to estimate the posterior distribution of depth throughout the line drawing. Finally this posterior can be integr ated to give an estimate of the relative depth of the probe points, which c an be compared directly to subjects' judgments.Such 3D shape inference from this model, the predicted certainty in depth difference for the probe poin ts on the stimuli in the experiment, was perceptually correct with the huma n responses, confirming that 3D shape perception from line drawing is proba bilistic and influenced by both local and non-local cues together.\n X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
Human vision has the ability to perceive 3D shape from line drawings alt hough most of the area in a line drawing image except the contours has no i nformation about depth at all. This study looks for the mechanisms underlyi ng inferences about 3D shape from line drawings. First, we conducted and an alyzed a psychophysical experiment to understand the nature of human interp retation of line drawings. We showed subjects line drawings with two ''prob e dots'' superimposed at locations in the drawing and asked them which appe ared closer. We found that the depth judgments propagated spatially with re lated to the distance of probe pairs from the T-junction in line drawings. This result supports that the belief in relative depth from the perceived s urface is not deterministic as in traditional “junction catalog&rdquo ; methods but rather probabilistic based on the interaction of local T-junc tion structure and non-local contour structure. To explain such results, we suggest a computational model that interprets line drawings into probable 3D surfaces in a Bayesian framework. This model numerically estimates a lik elihood function, assuming a generative model which generates random line d rawings by inflating 3D surfaces of biological shapes from skeletons and pr ojecting the surfaces from random viewpoints. The relation between the cont our segments in the random line drawings, which are tabulated via various l ocal and non-local features, and local 3D surfaces of the inflated sh apes are kept in a database, in order to search for the similar contour seg ments and to sample the probable local surfaces when a novel line drawing i s observed. The samples of surface orientations allow us to estimate the po sterior distribution of depth throughout the line drawing. Finally this pos terior can be integrated to give an estimate of the relative depth of the p robe points, which can be compared directly to subjects' judgments.Such 3D shape inference from this model, the predicted certainty in depth differenc e for the probe points on the stimuli in the experiment, was perceptually c orrect with the human responses, confirming that 3D shape perception from l ine drawing is probabilistic and influenced by both local and non-local cue s together.
