Prof. Papathomas received his BS, MS, and PhD from Columbia. He is Director of the Laboratory of Vision Research at Rutgers University, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and serves as Busch Campus Dean.
He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and papers.
His work on visual perception has been featured on the US National Public Radio, in television shows worldwide, and the New York Arts Biennial. Most recently, he gave the 2014 Vision Sciences Society Public Lecture on interactions between science and art at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
He has designed exhibits for science museums, won third prize in the 2008 BIOTY (International Best Illusion of the Year contest) and was a finalist in the 2012 BIOTY contest.
Research interests: Perception of 3D faces, objects, and scenes; perception of 3D environment under self-motion; differences in visual perception between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls; role of top-down cognitive processes in perception; interactions between scientists and artists.
