Our visual system has the ability to encode the statistical properties of large sets of objects on several feature dimensions, such as size, speed and orientation. Statistical processing is considered a mechanism that allows the system to economically represent sets of objects that exceed the capacity of focused attention. Although several studies suggest that statistical processing of sets is subject to different limitations than the encoding of individual objects, these limitations remain unclear. The experiments in this talk explore the boundaries of statistical processing by testing perception of sets viewed under different conditions, such as partial occlusion and divided attention between features. The neural networks involved in the statistical processing of separate feature dimensions will also be discussed.
