Progress sometimes requires agreement on what is to be explained and recent work on aesthetic response in the various brain and behavioural sciences is hampered by a lack of convergence on explananda. While philosophy sometimes serves to integrate explananda, traditional approaches to aesthetic response in philosophy are not up to the task. A new approach that centres on expertise and aesthetic reasons as involving perceptual sensitivities may be more promising.
