While cognitive decision-making studies often address how people combine many different cues, perceptual studies are usually limited to how people combine just two or three cues. A major benefit of perceptual psychophysics studies over cognitive decision-making studies is that behavior could be analyzed much more rigorously. In this talk I will go over optimal cue-combination and present two experiments that are perceptual analogs of cognitive decision-making tasks. The first looks at how people combine seven sequential bits of (visual) information. The second looks at how people go about sampling costly information to reduce (visual) uncertainty.
