I will introduce our ongoing work on a computational approach for a part-bases shape representation that is being conducted in the VILLAGE lab. We apply the causality theory about shape perception and compute the part structure by sequentially deleting visual parts. To solve the problem of non-uniqueness in the deletion, we take a path that preserves the symmetry structure of the shape and leads to a hierarchical representation that aligns the representation in the human visual system. How this representation can be applied in the computer graphics system will also be demonstrated.
